Kate Hudson is shrugging off criticism of her “Song Sung Blue” performance leveled at her by the son of a musician depicted in the biopic.
Hudson received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Claire Sardina, one-half of the real-life husband-and-wife musical duo Lightning and Thunder, who rose to national fame as a 1990s Neil Diamond tribute act.
Just days after “Song Sung Blue” hit theaters last month, however, she and co-star Hugh Jackman were deemed “monsters” by Michael Sardina Jr. ― the adult son of Jackman’s character, Mike Sardina, who insisted his late father would be “rolling in his grave right now” over the movie.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Thursday, Hudson had a brief but succinct response when asked about Michael Sardina Jr.’s comments.

“Honestly, I don’t even know,” she told the outlet. “Out of respect for our filmmakers, I’m not the right person to speak to it.”
As for the real-life Claire Sardina, the actor added: “I’m so happy that I got to know Claire, who’s such a wonderful woman, and she’s so happy with the movie.”
Written and directed by Craig Brewer, “Song Sung Blue” is based on a 2008 documentary of the same name that was released two years after Mike Sardina’s death at age 55.
Though Michael Sardina Jr. does not appear in the documentary, both he and his sister, Angelina Sardina, were brought on as consultants for the big-screen movie. Though the character of Angelina Sardina is portrayed by actor and musician King Princess, Michael Sardina Jr. is not referenced at any point in the new film.

Speaking to the Daily Mail last month, Michael Sardina Jr. blasted “Song Sung Blue” for having “completely destroyed the one thing my father worked his entire life to pass on ― his legacy,” and said he was considering legal action.
As for Hudson and Jackman, he noted: “Every interview that those monsters have been on [on] national television don’t even mention my existence at all, even though I was the most prevalent force in my father’s life, even when I wasn’t in Wisconsin, because I’m his only son.”
His comments contrasted sharply with that of his stepmother, who performed with Hudson and Jackman at the New York premiere of “Song Sung Blue” last month.
“His dream, initially, was, ‘We’re going to go to Vegas, baby, someday.’ Well, that didn’t happen,” Claire Sardina told “Inside Edition” when asked about how her late husband might view the film. “But this is just as good.”
