As Dr. Indira Gurubhagavatula, a sleep medicine physician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), previously told HuffPost, sleep apnea — a disorder in which one’s breathing is interrupted for seconds or minutes at a time during sleep — affects people of all ages, genders and body types, yet more than 80% of sleep apnea cases remain undiagnosed. If you experience loud, persistent snoring at night (first off, bless your partner), you may be showing major symptom of sleep apnea.
Luckily, there’s an extremely simple method for getting a little more relief: Swapping your pillow. Side sleeping or sleeping with a firm, elevated pillow can hellp improve respiration and clear those airways, leaving you breathing easy for a restful night. We found a wedge pillow that one reviewer calls a “game changer” for sleep apnea that’s actually on sale right now for 21% off for Prime Members when you clip the on-page coupon. (Our price trackers say the listed price regularly floats at $40.99!)
This soft, supportive wedge pillow measures 12 by 24 by 24 inches, with its shortest side its raised incline. It has a 1.5-inch gel-infused memory foam top perfect for hot nights, yet it’s dense enough to give you the support you need for side or back sleeping. This wedge pillow also comes with its own pillowcase, which is a big win considering it’s such an awkward shape. It also has side pockets for tucking in a phone, book or maybe even a journal.
Of course, you should always check with your doctor to determine the best plan of action for your sleep apnea.
“Perfect for heartburn relief or for snoring relief. Firm yet comfortable. Can be used to elevate feet or as a backrest in bed.” — Stephanie Khalife
“This wedge is nice and firm without being hard. The cover is great because it has pockets and a handle. The handle makes it easy to move around for storage when not in use. I bought it to help reduce my acid reflux and it has worked! The foam feels like a firm memory foam. When you press on it, it compresses and them slowly returns to shape. No bad smells like some foam can have. I’m very pleased with the quality for the price.” — Denise N.
“As a side sleeper, I took a chance in ordering this, not expecting it to work very well or give enough support, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised.
I place a large pillow at the side of the wedge that I’m facing, and between that and the wedge, my torso is supported and elevated without feeling awkward. It’s helped both my GERD and also my allergies and snoring. I’m 5’2” and it feels perfect. I don’t slide off too badly, and I don’t toss and turn much at all because of the support. I bought a cover for it separately. I can already tell I fall asleep faster, and the quality of sleep I get feels better. Wish I had gotten this sooner!” — L.A.“I love the pockets on the side of the pillowcase.
It actually comes with two pillowcases, which is something that the description I don’t think says, but that is a great value because you can wash one and you can still use your pillow while ones in the wash and then wash the other obviously so that’s extremely functional. The entire thing isn’t made out of the memory foam most of it’s actually made out of just regular foam and then there is like a 1 inch layer of memory foam or something like that. I don’t know if it’s memory foam or web, but it feels really similar.
And it does a good job of keeping everything cool if you are a hot sleeper like I am I think that maybe you might enjoy it.” — Christi E Afthonia
