Ready, set, action: The Oscars race has officially begun.
Actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards at 5:30 a.m. PT on Thursday, well before sunrise at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Beverly Hills headquarters.
Some 317 films were eligible for consideration across the awards’ 24 competitive categories, which includes the Best Casting Oscar for the first time this year.
Among last year’s buzziest films were Paul Thomas Anderson’s relentless political thriller “One Battle After Another,” Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic monster drama “Frankenstein” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” a rich, supernatural saga set in the Jim Crow South.
The 98th Oscars will take place March 15 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, with comic Conan O’Brien returning to host for the second year in a row.
