Neil Young really, really hates Jeff Bezos and Amazon — and it looks like that’s going to benefit music lovers in Greenland.
Back in October, the rock legend removed his music from the platform, but took things to another level this past weekend.
On Tuesday, he posted a message on his website declaring that he’s “honored to give a free year’s access to NeilYoungArchives.com” to Greenland’s 56,500 residents.
“I hope my Music and Music Films will ease some of the unwarranted stress and threats you are experiencing from our unpopular and hopefully temporary government,” he added. “It is my sincere wish for you to be able to enjoy all of my music in your beautiful Greenland home, in its highest quality.”
The 80-year-old Young said the recordings in the archives go back 62 years and promised Greenlanders, “You can renew for free as long as you are in Greenland,” while adding that he hopes other organizations “follow in the spirit of our example.”
The gift to Greenland comes a few days after Young went scorched-earth on Amazon and its head honcho, Bezos, with another post headlined, “Why I Don’t Use Amazon.”
The angry post began by noting that Bezos is “a billionaire backer” of President Donald Trump before stating that Trump’s “international policies” and “support of ICE” make it “impossible for me to ignore his actions.”
The musician then strongly recommended to fans who “feel as I do” that “you do not use Amazon,” and suggested they either purchase his music at record stores or alternative digital sources.
“My music will never be available on Amazon, as long as it is owned by Bezos,” he said. “My position is unfortunately harmful to my record company in the short term but I think the message I am sending is important and clear.”
Young has been speaking his mind a lot recently.
Earlier this month, Young wrote on his website, “Wake up people! Today The USA is a disaster.”
He then declared that Trump is ”destroying America bit by bit with his staff of wannabes, people with no experience or talent, closet alcoholic wife beaters, inexperienced leaders who only know how to lie to keep favor with the Trump falseness so they can hold their unearned positions in his inept government, a Congress full of Republicans acting like idiots with no conscience…”
